10 Ways To Start Taking Control

Most people are waiting for that day when life will just suddenly hand over control. We’re not really sure what that event will look like, but we’ll know it when we see it. We kinda just wanna wait and see what happens, while at the same time we’re never really taking control of our own lives. The following list some ways to help you take control of your life:

1. Take Care of Yourself
It’s much easier to be positive when you are eating well, exercising, and getting enough rest.  Eat healthier, workout regulary, drink plenty of water and get some sleep.

2. Remember to be Thankful
Sometimes we forget how blessed and priviledged our lives have become.  Take a look around the world, suddenly all your stresses and challenges don’t seem quite as bad. Stop and take 2-3 minutes everyday to just say Thank you, for everything you do have.

3. Don’t Assume
Accepting that something is true or certain to happen, without proof, is “the mother of all screwups”.  Don’t assume that people will be as Giving, Loving and Supportive of you, as you are of them.  Give, Love, Live without any assumptions.

4. Stop Complaining

5. Distance yourself from Negative People
People that are negative tend to resent people who aren’t. Talking to these people, whether they’re friends, family, or coworkers, can be draining and exhausting. The energy they represent will hinder your progress and happiness. Some love one’s, you have to love from a distance.
6. Step on the “ANTs”
Dr. Daniel Amen talks about “ANTs” – Automatic Negative Thoughts, in his book “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life”.  They are reactionary bad thoughts, like “Those people are laughing, they must be talking about me,” or “The boss wants to see me? It must be bad!”  When you notice these thoughts, Squash them, they’re ANTs.

7. Practice Hugging
You don’t have to be an expert to know the benefits of a good hug. Positive physical contact with friends and loved ones can be an instant pick-me-up. Hugs are an important expression of affection. By hugging someone, you remind them that you care about them and support them.

8. Increase Your Social Activity
Make sure you have ample play time with family and friends ( movies, plays, concerts, trips, outtings, etc. ). Attend events that allow you to meet new people. Surround yourself with healthy, happy people with positive attitudes.

9. Volunteer for an Organization
Find an organization that’s making a difference in peoples lives.  You can volunteer your time, your money, or your resources. The more positive energy you put out into the world, the more you will receive in return.

10. Stop Rumination
Psalm 42:5 “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?”  Rumination is a hyper-focus on something negative. It’s never productive, because it’s not rational or solution-oriented.  Instead of ruminating on negative thoughts and events, take time out to focus on the goodness God.

It takes courage to admit that you’re not in, or losing control of your life.  But you can change your attitude and habits to chart your own course and drive your life forward. You can set goals—and you can reach them! Despite the negative chaos that permeates society today, you can, take control of your life.
